The food police are alive and well in the United States and business is booming!

Just recently New York City banned the sale of large soft drinks and for the last several years restaurants have been displaying calorie counts on their menus.

Now comes word that, next year, Coca-Cola, PepsiCo, Dr. Pepper Snapple Group and others will start displaying the calorie count for drinks sold in vending machines.  As if that wasn't bad enough, the machines will also display a message reminding consumers to "check then choose" and "try a low calorie beverage."

Have we really fallen so far as a society that we need a machine to tell us that the soft drink we're ordering is probably not good for us?  Is anyone out there actually going to be swayed by this high tech 'guilt trip'?

Somewhere personal responsibility is hanging its head in shame and probably tossing back a big gulp!
