It started in 2010 as a response to Black Friday and Cyber Monday by American Express. Small Business Saturday is dedicated to supporting small businesses across the country.

American Express started the website ShopSmall.com to help you find businesses in your area that are participating (and are qualifying American Express accepting businesses) but you probably know the locally owned businesses in your town.

Some of the stores in Sioux Falls that the website suggested were: Last Stop CD Shop, 1st Cash & Exchange, Zandbroz, Meat Lodge, Uncle Ed's Specialty Meats & Catering and Outdoor Gear.

A couple of other ideas would be two that we've highlighted over the past few weeks: Abandoned: South Dakota, which is now offering prints for order. And Sioux Falls musician Phil Baker's kickstarter campaign to record "It's a Snow Day", which will be a music CD for children who love the snow.

We know you want to save money while doing your holiday shopping, but you can do it while supporting your neighbors who are doing business in your town today (and everyday) as well.

And if you make a purchase through Small Business Saturday, post a picture to their Facebook page. They might share your picture and show you supporting local business!
