Police Information Officer Sam Clemens says a Sioux Falls woman was taken in by an IRS scam phone call.

"It was someone who said he was with the IRS. The caller told the woman they had gone through some back taxes and she owed over 6 thousand dollars in cash. The caller said if she didn't wire the money immediately that they would arrest her with a warrant. She left work and went to the bank, took out the money and wired it. The victim then received another phone call asking her to send and additional 9 thousand dollars. Unfortunately she went back to the bank, withdrew the money and sent that as well."

Clemens offers this message for others that might get one of these calls.

"Since it's tax season we want to remind people that the IRS does not make phone calls. If people are delinquent on their taxes or owe money---the IRS will send a letter."

If you get a call from a tax scammer, Clemens urges you to report it to the Sioux Falls Police Department.
