A teenage runaway got tangled in a web of deceit with someone who wasn’t what they seemed. Sioux Falls Police arrested a 19-year-old man as a result.

A 14-year-old girl ran away from home on Thursday (September 22) and was spotted at the Empire Mall Monday (September 27) afternoon. Officer Sam Clemens says the police uncovered more than someone who was lost.

“While the officers were looking into the runaway aspect, they ended up discovering that the two of them had sex on a few different occasions during the time that she was missing.”

Clemens also says that complicating the situation was her companion was older than he let on.

“When they met (through a mutual friend), he told her that he was fifteen. Our victim is fourteen years old. That was kind of the reason that they started initially hanging out. She didn’t realize that he was an adult until after the officers found the two of them together.”

Nineteen-year-old Miguel Anibal Lopez of Sioux Falls was arrested on 11 counts of Second Degree Rape.

If convicted, the maximum penalty for the crime is 50 years in jail plus up to a $50,000 fine for each count.
