In the last couple of years I've become slightly obsessed with watching 3 Gun Nation on TV and USPSA multi-gun competitions on Youtube. This Sunday I will get my first taste of it.

The Sioux Falls Practical Shooters are holding their first 3 gun shoot of the year on Sunday May 31 at Big Sioux Rifle and Pistol Club. Cost is $20 and will begin at 10:00 A.M.

The only things you must have to shoot are a pistol, a rifle, a shotgun and ammunition. holsters and pouches for your pistol and magazines and shotgun shells is highly recommended.

As for the ammo itself you will probably need 100 rounds of shotgun, 100 rounds of rifle, and 150 rounds of pistol will likely be enough. However, I learned at my first pistol shoot that "enough" isn't always enough. I will be bringing some extra of everything. Also, your ammo does not need to be special. I will be shooting full metal jacket bullets in my pistol and rifle and 2.75 inch target load shotgun shells.

The rifle shots will not be long ones. There is only 25 yards of space so that is the longest rifle shots you will be making. Using a 3-9x or 4-12x scope would not be advisable. Iron sights work great as would a 1-4x or other fixed power 1x scope.

If you think you want to run out and buy all the fancy gear that goes with it, don't. Pro shooter Jesse Tischauser wrote a great article on what you need and don't need. The main thing he pointed out that you don't need is to "go and watch." What you should do is "go and shoot." It doesn't matter if you don't have the cool shotgun shell holders and the only shotgun you have is the old 870 Remington 12 gauge you got when you were 11-years-old, which is totally me. Just show up and shoot! No one will mock you because you don't have gear. The experienced guys just want more people to start doing it.
