Sioux Falls Police Officer Sam Clemens says a vehicle was ripped off Monday morning while the owner was putting the key into the ignition while bending over outside of the car. .

"A guy came up and asked him for a cigarette. He said 'I don't have one.' The suspect ended up punching the victim a couple of times, pushed him out of the way, jumped in the car and drove away."

Clemens says it's important to be aware of one's surroundings day and night.

"People should be aware of their situation and their surroundings. Being out in the early morning---if you see someone around, wait until they're gone.  Instead of leaning in the car, get inside and lock the door. Just keep an eye on your surroundings and try to think cautiously."

Clemens says the stolen vehicle is a 1999 Silver Grand Prix.
