Sioux Falls Police Search for Suspect in Money Scam that Cost Resident $9,400

A Sioux Falls man is out thousands of dollars after believing scammers who told him he was a big winner in a well-knowm sweepstakes.

Police Information Officer Sam Clemens says a caller told the 50-year-old man Friday afternoon that he had won $835,000 from Publishers’ Clearing House.

“[The suspect] gave him a bunch of different numbers to call. One was a claims department number, and another was supposed to be an attorney,” explained Clemens. “So he just basically would call these numbers and they would refer him to anohter person and eventually he got to one person who said that they needed him to go around and pick up some money pack cards in $500 denominations and those would be used to pay the taxes on the money he had won. So he went around to several stores and ended up paying for $9,400 in money packs.”

Clemens says the man soon began to realize he had been scammed.

He says the caller told the victim that once he paid the money, a representative would meet him at a bank branch in Sioux Falls to give him the prize, but that didn’t happen.

Clemens says one other local resident had the same type of call, but recognized it as a scam.
