Extra police officers will be out on the streets of Sioux Falls during the New Year's Eve celebrations.

Captain Greg VandeKamp says 16 extra officers and two additional supervisors will be working from 8pm until 4am, and he says their sole purpose will be to target intoxicated and impaired drivers.

VandeKamp says New Year's Eve is a night when many people celebrate with alcohol, and he says the drinking alone is not the problem.

He says it's excess drinking and then driving that cause the problems, so he says police are encouraging responsible celebration.

VandeKamp says the additional officers will be evenly distributed between the east and west sides of the city, but he says the deployment could be changed, depending on the activity.
