Sioux Falls Police Information Officer Sam Clemens says violence erupted between a boyfriend and girlfriend in a room at the Arena Motel.

"He ended up putting her in a choke hold and restricted her breathing to the point where she was struggling to breathe. Eventually, things calmed down from there. The next morning it started back up again. He pushed her a few times. She went to leave and he grabbed hold of her to keep her in the room. He told the girlfriend she wasn't going to leave the room. A friend stopped by and the victim yelled to the friend to call police."

Once police arrived, 26-year-old Daniel Bien of Sioux Falls was arrested for aggravated assault domestic and kidnapping.

Clemens says domestic violence is much too common in Sioux Falls.

"We are mandated by law to make an arrest if there is evidence of a domestic assault. The officers know their stuff and know what they're doing. The officers are also talking to the victims and letting them know domestic violence is not a normal situation. There are places in the community to get help. What they're doing is trying to break the cycle of domestic violence."

It is estimated that 35 percent of women have experienced physical and/or sexual violence from an intimate partner in their lifetime.
