A 12 year old Sioux Falls boy allegedly assaulted a school resource officer at Patrick Henry Middle School on Thursday.

"We had a student that hadn't returned to class," according to Police Department Public Information Officer Sam Clemens.

"The school resource officer was looking for him. When he found the boy, the student didn't want to go back to class and ended up getting into a scuffle with the officer. The student pushed him, scratching him, trying to bite him several times. A staff member helped out. The student was then trying to bite and scratch him. Eventually they were able to get him handcuffed. Things kind of calmed down from there. The boy was turned over to his mother."

Clemens says the student will now appear in juvenile court.

"There are a couple of things that are going to happen. Obviously the school has their own protocol. Since he was charged, the student will be petitioned into juvenile court. He will have to speak to a judge. Obviously there are a lot of options open to the judge at this point."

The boy was charged with simple assault on law enforcement.
