Felony crime in the Sioux Falls metropolitan area is on the rise.

According to information from the Minnehaha County State's Attorney's Office, during the first five months of 2016, drug cases in the Sioux Falls area were up 11 percent from last year, burglary cases up 38 percent and robbery cases are up 68 percent.

The spike in felony crime in the Sioux Empire has risen so much, that felony criminal cases in the region are on pace to about double what they were compared to fiscal 2009.

During that year we saw roughly 1,800 cases, current projections now have them reaching nearly 3,600 cases.

What's the primary cause for the spike? Authorities aren't exactly sure. But, a rise in the population base in the area could be a good reason.

The latest estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau now shows the Sioux Falls metropolitan area playing home to nearly 252,000 people. That's an increase of more than 10 percent from the 2010 Census.
