Sioux Falls Man Arrested for Using Belt to Discipline One-Year Old Child

A 31 year-old man was detained for striking one of his girlfriend's children in a Sioux Falls home. Police say the incident took place after 3:00 PM on Sunday.

Officer Sam Clemens says Mark Craig was at a home on West 26th Street with his girlfriend’s two children ages two and one.

“The two kids were playing with shades in one of the rooms. She yelled at them to knock it off,” said Clemens. “They eventually broke one of the shades and she told her boyfriend to tell the kids to leave the shades alone.”

According to Clemens the girlfriend heard the one year-old being struck twice on the stomach. When she went to tell her boyfriend to stop, he deliberately stepped on the one year-old’s leg before leaving the room.

The girlfriend left with the two children to go to a relative’s house to call police. Craig was still at the house when police arrived.

The child was checked out at a hospital with no serious injuries. Craig faces charges of abuse or cruelty to a minor which is a felony.
