Sioux Falls Interchange Structure Inspection Starts Wednesday

Be ready for a slowdown at one of South Dakota’s main highway intersections. Beginning Wednesday morning, April 3, the State Department of Transportation will reduce traffic on both Interstate 90 and Interstate 29 at the interchange.

A bridge maintenance engineer will be inspecting the overpass structures are sound and ready to handle the expected traffic for the coming year. The lane closures will take place during normal working hours and take two days to complete.

On Interstate 90, the passing lanes will be closed for both eastbound and westbound traffic at the interchange from approximately 9am to 4pm. Concurrently, Interstate 29 will have just one lane closed during the inspection process, but the closed lane will shift as the inspection process continues.  For example if the engineer decides to start inspecting on the east end, the inside northbound lane on I-29 will be closed first and as the inspection moves west the corresponding one lane will be closed at a time to accommodate the examination.

Motorists should also be advised that the turning loop on-ramps will have some traffic control as well. As a result, there will be less room for merging traffic especially as vehicles transition onto I-90.
