Sioux Falls Ice Storm 2013 Clean-up

I live a pretty sheltered life. Monday I was in Omaha and didn't get back to Sioux Falls until 3 a.m. Tuesday morning. I stayed inside all day Tuesday and then Wednesday and Thursday I drove from home to work and back, which is about 3 blocks. Today, during my lunch hour, I ventured further east and could not believe my eyes. Where I live, there are a few tree branches down, but nothing like these other neighborhoods in Sioux Falls. We have a lot of clean-up to do. Here is some good information from the City of Sioux Falls about tree drop-off sites and extended hours for the landfill.

City Begins Removal of Storm Debris in Public Right-of-Way

With the favorable forecast this weekend, many people will begin to assess and clean up the damage from the storm. One of the response priorities is to keep roads open for safe travel of the public and emergency responders. To support that effort, City crews are currently partnering with private contractors to remove damaged, hanging branches from trees and debris in the public right-of-way between the sidewalk and curb. Initial work will begin in the core area of town, the area that received the most damage from this week’s storm.

To continue efficient street clearing operations, trees and branches are being placed on the public right-of-way. City officials continue to develop a citywide long-term debris management plan that will include removal of fallen trees and branches.

To help us help you, if you can safely remove your fallen branches, the City encourages you to take them to either of the two free branch drop-off sites. The drop-off sites are located at either the Street Department (1000 East Chambers Street) or the Sioux Empire Fairgrounds (North Lyons Boulevard). Drop-off sites remain open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily.

Tree Drop-Off Sites and Landfill Extended Hours Due to Ice Storm

What: Effective immediately, the City of Sioux Falls is extending the hours of operation for the Sioux Falls Regional Sanitary Landfill and its two tree branch drop-off sites to assist with cleanup due to the ice storm.

Where:

East Side East Chambers Street (west of Cliff Avenue by the Household Hazardous Waste Facility and Street Department). Access is available from North Drive to East Ash Street to Chambers Street, and from North Cliff Avenue to Chambers Street. Branches must be placed in a pile and no other waste can be dropped off.
West Side North Lyons Boulevard (west of the Sioux Empire Fairgrounds). Access is available from West 12th Street to North Lyons Boulevard, and from West Madison Street to North Lyons Boulevard. Branches must be placed in a pile and no other waste can be dropped off.
Landfill 267th Street and 463rd Avenue (Five miles west of City limits). Access is available from West 41st Street to 463rd Avenue, then south into the landfill.

When: Saturday, April 13, 2013, (ending date will be determined later) Monday–Sunday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Charges: Charges will be waived for fallen branches from the ice storm.

Commercial loads will not be accepted at the temporary drop-off sites and must go directly to the City of Sioux Falls Sanitary Landfill.

All loads must be tarped or in an enclosed vehicle.

Not accepted at in-town temporary sites: nonwood waste, rubble, or household garbage.
