A Sioux Falls group that been in existence for not quite three years has built such a reputation that the Big Apple has taken notice.

Julie Anderson Friesen who is the driving force behind Cinema Falls says “We’re very excited that we have been invited to participate in the New York Film Critics Series.  It’s a unique opportunity to see films in advance of their theatrical release.”

Friesen says the main goal for the series is to gain wide exposure for the best films in the industry.  Whether it’s films that could have award-winning potential or those that deserve a little wider audience, the New York Film Critics Series is an advocate for high quality cinema.

Friesen says this invitation is quite exclusive.

“(New York Film Critics Series) typically work with the 50 top art house theaters in the country.  Often times this is a film that otherwise wouldn’t come to Sioux Falls at all.  Plus they include exclusive content.”

This arrangement also has the potential to shift the timeline for movies to be shown in Sioux Falls even before a nationwide release.

“I feel like our audience deserves a lot of credit for that.  They show up.  They buy passes and that is what speaks.”

The first film as a part of this arrangement is “Cake” starring Jennifer Aniston which meets the awards buzz criteria.  According to Friesen, along with the showing of the film on Tuesday January 20 at 6:30 PM, Pete Travers, who is a film critic for Rolling Stone magazine, will conduct a Q & A on screen with Aniston following the film.
