Sioux Falls Police Information Officer Sam Clemens says a foster mother has been arrested in connection with the death of a two-year-old boy in her care.

"This began January fourth. The initial call to police by the foster mom indicated a boy had breathing problems. He was then taken to the hospital. At first, there didn't appear to be anything suspicious. But, once in the hospital, doctors found a cracked skull and there was some blood on the child's brain. A couple days later, he was taken off life support and died. We didn't know if it was an intentional act that caused the injuries or if it was accidental."

The investigation changed once the coroner's report was completed.

"The coroner ruled the manner of death was homicide due to traumatic brain injury."

Clemens says 32-year-old Mary Beth Jennewein of Sioux Falls has been arrested and charged with second degree murder and manslaughter.
