It’s a concept that continues to grow around Sioux Falls neighborhoods. A group of firefighters constructed a free lending library for all to enjoy.

The book sharing receptacle is tucked away on Dakota Avenue on the east side of Fire Station Number 3 at 37th and Minnesota. Dave Wallace one of the B Shift firefighters says from concept to completion took a few weeks.

“It actually did take quite a while with probably a month worth of planning. Then to actually build it took another month. A lot of the stuff like cutting the lumber was done on my days off. I have table saws at home and we don’t get interrupted with calls that way.”

In less than a week since being installed, books are already in the container and Wallace invites people of all ages to use it.

“That’s the whole idea behind these little libraries is you can come and go any time of day or night. We actually put a little light on it. It’s a nice spot off the side street so it’s a safer area than in front of the building. Anytime anybody wants to stop by and pick up a book they can. It’s not locked ever.”

Acknowledging the fire station influence, the handle to open the library door is a decommissioned fire alarm lever. Wallace also notes that the lending library adds to the fire station’s curb appeal with more exterior projects yet to come.
