‘Rape’ Case Causes Controversy in Sioux Falls

It doesn’t happen often, but when it does, I’m sure investigators are frustrated.

A Sioux Falls woman had told police she was walking on North Main Avenue early Sunday when a man pulled her by the hair into an alley and raped her, and she was pretty descriptive about how it happened.

A day or two later she changed her story, telling a detective she really had been assaulted, but by a man she knows, and in a building farther north and not in an alley in the 500 block of North Main after all.

As I’m writing this, the case is still being investigated, and I’m not downplaying the sexual assault because the woman is still a victim.

Information Officer Sam Clemens says police investigate any time a crime is reported, and he says it happens where someone will either minimize or exaggerate on the details.

He says it’s always a challenge to find out the truth and it’s not always easy.

But it goes back to what Officer Clemens has said many times before: in the vast majority of sexual assault cases, the woman knows the suspect. And if these details prove to be true, that’s what happened in this case.

The case has caused some controversy on Facebook, with residents taking sides:

Christine Polk – Why would you lie?? Now her credibility is gone. Whether or not it happened, i no longer believe anything happened to her, and i hope they charge her w/false information. Ppl got better things to do with their time instead of dealing with liars. She is wasting tax dollars. Charge her.

Amber Kelley – She’s crying wolf and should be ashamed of herself!

Tami Lillie – And this is why people question women when the cry rape! Because a majority of the time, the women don’t tell the whole truth! Makes me soooo angry!!

Maureen Patch Smook – Only one reason she would change her story, it never happened. I really hope she realizes she put every woman in SF on edge because of this.

Still, some people have come to the defense of the victim in the case.

Jolene Loetscher – There is such a tremendous stigma around rape and sexual assault as well as reporting it. When people continue to judge those who come forward with comments like this, it only empowers the rapists. It takes such a level of courage and strength to report these crimes and when you attack the woman in this situation with your words and judgment, you attack every woman who has been assaulted. You undermine the ability for victims to come forward and in coming forward, help stop these perpetrators.

Others have mixed feelings about the case:

Julie Klooster Beaner – Not only lied about where but first said it was a complete stranger and then changed it to someone she knows and a totally different location. Only thing that stayed the same is the time she says it happened. Sometimes people are scared when they first report but it just makes them look not credible.
