The Summer Olympics in Rio are quickly approaching and the Olympic trials for gymnastics and track and field were over the weekend.

A local face participated in track and field in the 5,000 meters and got second place, which means, SHE'S GOING TO THE OLYMPICS!

Shelby Houlihan, from Sioux City and an East High graduate, can now add Olympian to her resume.

Houlihan finished in 15:06.14, which is a new personal best. She came in second, but just barely. The first place finisher, Molly Huddle, finished in 15:05.01.

Houlihan is the first female track and field Olympian out of Sioux City. F. Morgan Taylor, who graduated from the now defunct Central High, was an Olympian in the 1932 Olympics in Paris.

Houlihan has had a pretty impressive track career up until now. She won eight state track titles while in high school. She also won eight Drake Relays titles and one state cross country title.

Then in college at Arizona State, she was a 12 time All American and the NCAA champion in the 1,500 meters in 2014 then runner-up in 2015.

We will all have to keep our eye out for Shelby Houlihan when the Olympics from Rio begin  August 5.

Here is an interview Houlihan did after the race with The Oregonian.
