Now that 'Game of Thrones' season 3 has begun its run, and 'The Walking Dead' has closed up shop until season 4, genre TV fans have plenty of new adventures to look forward to. ABC's 'S.H.I.E.L.D.' TV series has yet to recieve an official series order, but will likely debut this fall regardless, continuing the adventures of Agent Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) and a new team. Yet every Marvel fan still has one major question for the series: just how will Coulson return for 'S.H.I.E.L.D.' after the events of 'The Avengers'?

Joss Whedon, Marvel and ABC's forthcoming 'S.H.I.E.L.D.' TV series is still a ways off, but most eager fans are excited to learn how Agent Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) will return as the central character of the series, given his fate toward the climax of Marvel's big-budget blockbuster 'The Avengers.' Plenty of fan theories have floated about, while Gregg himself talked to Collider to drive anticipation for the character's return.

Speaking of his fondness for playing the character (and his ultimate fate), Gregg said:

And even though my friends at Marvel said, ‘You know, we spent a lot of time talking about how Coulson lives, and we know that there’s a movement out there, and there are t-shirts and people paint on bridges ‘Coulson Lives’, we’re going to bring you back’, and it’s one of the many things people tell you that never ever happens. And then I get this call from Joss saying, ‘Well…there’s a script. And here’s what we’re thinking, and it’s after The Avengers, and here’s the concept.’ By the time Joss finished telling me, I was in.

After people see the show, they’ll have some clue as to why I’m still there, still breathing. But I don’t think they’ll know everything.

When asked if the circumstances of Coulson's return would play out over the course of a first season, Gregg wouldn't confirm anything, but added "that sounds like a good idea."

Marvel’s ‘S.H.I.E.L.D.’ TV series features a cast that includes Clark Gregg’s resurrected Agent Phil Coulson, as well as ‘ER’ vet Ming-Na, Chloe Bennet, Brett Dalton, Elizabeth Henstridge and Iain De Caestecker as the other agents of the team. Nick Fury himself, Samuel L. Jackson previously stated that he expected to be involved in some small capacity, while ‘How I Met Your Mother‘ and ‘The Avengers‘ star Cobie Smulders remains open to the possibility as well.

Clark Gregg had plenty to say about his cast mates for the 'S.H.I.E.L.D.' TV series as well as Coulson's potential to return in future Marvel films, so check out the full interview over at Collider, and tell us what you want to see from the 'S.H.I.E.L.D.' TV series in the comments! Will ABC decide to pick up the project to series?
