Seventh Inning Magic Leads Augustana To Sweep Over Northern State
OMAHA, NE – Augustana (20-15, 8-6 NSIC) completed the series sweep of Northern State (13-15, 6-8 NSIC) as the Vikings won the first game 3-1 after a three-run home run by Kye Winter in the top of the seventh inning and a six-run top of the seventh inning in game two helped the Vikings to a 14-3 win in the series finale.
Winter had a big day for the Vikings, drilling the game-winning three run home run in the seventh inning of game one before driving in a career-high six runs after a 3-for-4 performance, including a triple and two home runs. He finished the day with four hits in seven at bats with a triple, three home runs and nine RBI.
Jordan Milbrath tossed a gem to earn his fifth win of the season and improve to 5-0. Milbrath was throwing a one-hitter before giving up two hits and an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh. He finished the game with six strikeouts.
Augustana picked up five hits in the game, with two of them coming in the top of the seventh inning. Marcus O’Neill hit his seventh double of the season and went 2-for-3 at the plate.
Northern State had a hit and left a runner on base in the bottom of the second inning before Milbrath shut the door and allowed just one base runner, on a fielding error by the Vikings, over the next four innings.
After Winter’s game-winning homer in the top of the seventh, Northern State was able to push a run across to make it a 3-1 game. Cameron Lehner started off the inning with a single and scored the Wolves’ lone run with one out in the inning on a sacrifice fly by Maurice Rodriguez.
Milbrath was able to get out of the inning without any further damage to give Augustana its third straight win in the series.
O’Neill continued to hit well in the second game going 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI, hitting his first home run of the season. Alex Fink was 4-for-4 at the plate and hit his fifth double of the season while driving in a run, and scoring three.
Augustana used two big innings to cruise past Northern State in the series finale. The Vikings blasted 16 hits in the game, including five in the top of the seventh inning.
Augustana scored two runs in the top of the second and another in the third to make it a 3-0 game early. In the second inning, the Vikings scored the game’s first run on Winter’s triple that scored Fink, who led off the inning with a double. Winter then scored on a wild pitch to make the score 2-0. In the third, the Vikings added a run on an RBI single by Fink.
Northern State tied the game at 3 in the bottom of the fourth inning scoring three runs on four hits, but the Vikings answered right back with a four-run fifth inning to regain the lead, now at 7-3. Augustana hit two home runs in the inning including a solo shot by O’Neill and a two-run homer by Winter over the center field wall.
The Vikings made it 8-3 in the sixth inning when Zach Dibble scored on a wild pitch and then broke things open with six runs in the seventh to extend their lead to 11 at 14-3.
Sam Gotham earned the win on the bump for the Vikings, improving his season record to 3-1. Gotham gave up just two hits while striking out two batters. Bennett Johnson started the game for the Vikings and lasted 4.0 innings giving up all three runs on five hits while striking out seven.
Augustana is scheduled to play Upper Iowa at Karras Park Home of Ronken Field at 3 p.m. on Wednesday.
