This week President Barack Obama outlined plans to issue Executive Orders which are designed to curb gun violence.

U.S. Senator Mike Rounds feels the President’s proposals place the focus on the weapon instead of the people. For Rounds, a multi-faceted approach would be a better way to address the problem.

“You have to address the issue of who the people are that are doing harm,” Rounds says. “You have to recognize three different groups. All of which we can identify pretty quickly: Terrorists, Bad People and People that have real Mental Illnesses.”

According to Rounds, each category has its own special challenges. “You can’t treat one the same way you treat another.”

Focusing on terrorists, Rounds says a specific plan within lawful means would work best. “We should be gathering a base of data that nobody can see without a court order. We should have it there so that when we do identify a particular terrorist, we can go back in and pull the meta data out and determine who (the terrorists) are talking to and what information they are sharing.”

Rounds is currently touring the state inviting people to “Coffee and Conversations with Mike” events. During his stop in Sioux Falls on Wednesday, Rounds says many of the topics South Dakotans want to discuss are Veteran’s benefits, the budget and military base allowances.
