Even though the Beatles broke up at the height of their popularity and not under the best circumstances, the bandmates always remained proud of their accomplishments. The new John Lennon book The John Lennon Letters, includes a note from Lennon to McCartney sent at Christmas 1971 along with a professionally duplicated copy of the Beatles 1962 Decca Records audition from January 1, 1962.

Here's what the note said:

"Happy Xmas! (war is over if you want it...)

THE BEATLES

Dear Paul Linda et, al this is THE DECCA AUDITION!! I found the bootleg not the tape; they were a good group fancy turning this down.

Love,
John & Yoko"
