Rock Report: Gary Glitter Arrested in London
Rocker Gary Glitter was arrested in London in relation to a sex offense case early Sunday morning (Oct. 28). Glitter, who is best known for his single ‘Rock & Roll (Part 2),’ was taken into custody as part of a broader case against late BBC DJ Jimmy Savile.
The BBC reports that police were investigating allegations that Saville, who passed away last year at the age of 84, had sexually abused over 300 young people over a 40-year-period. Officers from what has been dubbed “Operation Yewtree” revealed that they had “arrested a man in his 60s in connection with the investigation.”
They stated, “The man, from London, was arrested at approximately 0715 on suspicion of sexual offenses. The individual fails under the strand of the investigation we have termed ‘Savile and others.'” Though the police did not reveal Glitter by name, the BBC and several other media outlets identified the man in question as the singer.
Scotland Yard has stated that over 400 lines of inquiry have become part of the “Operation Yewtree” investigation, as they attempt to find the truth behind Savile’s alleged attacks on young girls and boys.
Glitter was the first person to be arrested in connection with the Savile inquiry. This would not be the 68-year-old singer’s first brush with the law, as he was jailed in Vietnam in 2006 for child sex offenses. He was also convicted in 1999 for possessing child pornography.
The singer was released on bail until mid-December.
