RAPID CITY - A man accused of killing his mother in South Dakota is to go on trial in the spring.

The Rapid City Journal reports that trial for Matthew Tornquist has been scheduled to begin May 14.

The 27-year-old Tornquist faces charges of first-degree and second-degree murder as well as grand theft in the October 2011 disappearance of his mother, Catherine Tornquist, in Hot Springs. He has pleaded not guilty and remains in custody.

Tornquist could face life in prison if convicted. Prosecutor Matt Brown says he will not pursue the death penalty in the case.
