To illustrate just how addicted society has become to social media, Facebook went down for 19 minutes on Friday, August 1, 2014 and people started freaking out!

It's no surprise people love their Facebook, and when it's suddenly stripped away from them, it becomes life and death for some.

Change my status to "bummed."

It got so bad in La Crescenta, California during that 19 minute period on Friday, that the La Crescenta police department went on Twitter and wrote, quote, "Facebook is not a law enforcement issue, please stop calling us about it being down, we don't know when it will be back up."

That's right, there were actually people calling 911 to report a Facebook outage.

These are probably some of the same people that call your friendly law enforcement agency when they get the wrong toppings on their pizza or when someone steals their illegal drugs. We're talking people of the land. The common clay of the new West. You know... morons.

If anyone should have hit the panic button that day, it should have been Facebook itself.

Based on Facebook's average revenue from last quarter, it makes about $22,543 per minute according to TheWire.com. So going down for approximately 19 minutes cost Facebook and estimated $426, 607.

I realize that number is probably chump change to Facebook, but still, the thought of losing nearly a half a million would prompt me to hit the panic button!
