A new scam is being reported in Sioux Falls, and while no one has been victimized yet, several residents have told police they have been called.

Officer Sam Clemens says the callers use a local number, possibly pirated, and claim to be from “First Alert” or “Life Alert.”

Clemens says the callers tell the people being targeted that their account has been set up and that they need information as soon as possible so the “system” can be installed.

“They are pretty persistant about it, saying an account has already been set up and that information is going to be sent to them or has already been sent to them and just has not arrived yet,” Clemens explained. “They are going to ask for some details to get that stuff and get it set up. So what they are doing is getting that account number and then at some point later getting money out of that account. We haven’t had anybody that has fell for it yet, but we just want to put the word out there that this is a new type of scam.”

Clemens also says the scammers seem to be targeting people of a certain age, although he says the calls could also be random. But again, he says he’s not aware of anyone falling for the scam yet.
