With July 4th fast approaching, Sioux Falls Police Officer Sam Clemens reminds residents that only a few fireworks are allowed in the city limits of Sioux Falls.

"It's going to be like sparklers, snakes or smoke bombs...something along those lines. The way the law is worded is that fireworks that have any audible report, projectile or launching component are actually prohibited. For the most part that is going to cover just about all of your different fireworks. We get a lot of different fireworks calls this time of year. It's up to the officer to use their discretion if they want to issue a warning or ticket. We have seen both of them---a lot of warnings and tickets that have been issued over the years."

If you're planning to shoot fireworks outside Sioux Falls, Clemens offers this advice.

"If you have fireworks and want to enjoy them---make sure you are outside the city limits of Sioux Falls. Make sure you clean up the fireworks mess afterward. That's one of the things the county residents always dread dealing with the next day."

After fireworks complete their burning, Sioux Falls Fire Marshall Dean Lanier says you need to douse the device with plenty of water from a bucket or hose before discarding it to prevent a trash fire.
