Police say a Sioux Falls man is charged with burglary and assault after he allegedly broke into his ex-girlfriend's apartment and attacked her as she slept.

Officer Sam Clemens says it happened around 5pm Wednesday in a building in the 3000 block of South Mayfair Drive.

He says the woman had a no-contact order against the man, and she wasn't sure how he got in, but he punched her as she slept and tried to strangle her.

Clemens says at some point it ended and she was able to call police.

Clemens says Phillip Carnelius Fowler, 41, was arrested around midnight at a hotel on West Russell Street and charged with second-degree burglary, domestic aggravated assault and violation of a protection order.

The 30-year-old woman was treated at a hospital, but Clemens says her injuries were not serious.
