As Sioux Falls public school students reported to class on Tuesday, police units were near the schools---looking for motorists that aren't obeying traffic laws, including speeding in school zones.

I accompanied one of the police officers assigned to several schools. Officer Greg Slaven is an 18 year veteran of the Sioux Falls Police Department.

"We enforce the school zones all year long. It's not just the first week of school and then we're done. The officers I work with daily are always keeping a close watch of motorists that don't obey the traffic laws."

Slaven says getting a ticket in a school zone is expensive.

"One of these tickets costs a lot of money. You also can get a big hit on insurance. Some people don't take that into consideration. There are a lot of different ways you can pay out of pocket. As much as its costs to get a speeding ticket alone and higher insurance rates---that's a big deterrent for a lot of people."

If a motorist is exceeding the school zone speed limit by 15 miles, it's going to cost $125! Reason enough to slow down and obey the law!
