It was just an ordinary Wednesday afternoon in Pierre, until it wasn't. A landscaping crew was toiling away near the "S" curve area, putting in new shrubbery and redoing the brick wall around the flagpole, when they found a piece of a human skull.

Pierre Police Captain Derald Gross said that further investigation of the site was done by an archaeologist with the State Historical Society, but no other remains were found. A determination was made that the skull fragment was likely in a load of rock used during the original work done in 2000, because no excavation had been done during the current project.

The South Dakota Forensic Laboratory has taken possession of the skull piece and will be sending it to an expert in Kansas for further investigation.
