Eagle Attacking Drone

People love drones for being able to capture the beauty and awe of something from above. However, many people also hate drones because they have been used to invade their personal space. But people aren't the only ones who are feeling threatened by these sometimes small, un-piloted aircrafts.

Just recently, a drone was flying over a wooded area of Melbourne, Australia, when it was attacked by an Australian wedge-tailed eagle. This bird of prey is very territorial and was clearly feeling threatened by the drone that had flown too close, attacking and sending it tumbling to the ground.

The pilot of the drone, Adam Lancaster, said the eagle was fine after the attack, but the drone needed some repair before it could be flown again. He advises,

Do not fly drones near birds of prey. They clearly attack, seeing you as a threat or the right-sized dinner. If you see a bird of prey while flying. Land.

Drones can obviously have a negative impact on birds and other wildlife. A drone that was being used to study the flight patterns and soaring motions of birds was attacked and carried off by an eagle, an eastern grey kangaroo recently attacked a flying drone that was flying too close to her joey and a chimpanzee has been caught on camera hitting a drone to the ground using a stick.

Rules on using drones in the United States for personal and/or public use as well as drones being used to film nature documentaries are currently being reviewed.
