Downtown Sioux Falls parking will be slightly diminished Friday night for a design competition. The effort will expand the concept of urban life.

During Sioux Falls Design Week the goal is to expand concepts for architecture, landscape design, graphic design and more. Stacy McMahan is with Sioux Falls Design Center and says some students from different SDSU School of Design disciplines will build parklets on Friday.

“We had 31 proposals. We had a great panel of designers and artists select the top six. These teams will build their parklet in a parking stall.”

Allie who leads one of the design teams describes how the space is used in practice.

“Instead of a car being parked there, you’ll have a useful space where people can sit and play or leisurely dine. It’s a friendly space for the public to use. It’s a new thing for Sioux Falls to be seeing this. A lot of major cities have them.”

Allie says her design will include ropes and beams as a fully interactive space. As a former nursing major, Allie says moving over to landscape architecture was the perfect choice for her.

McMahan says the six stalls will be dedicated to the competition for a day and a half and unavailable for vehicle parking along the 100 block of 11th Street.

The public will be able to view and vote for their favorite parklet design and talk with the design teams on Friday from 5:00 to 9:00 PM.
