O’Neill Leads Vikings To Sweep Over Northern State
OMAHA, NE — After snapping a five-game losing streak with an 8-7 extra inning win in game one, Augustana completed the sweep over Northern State with a 5-1 win in game two of the NSIC twinbill. Marcus O’Neill had a big day for the Vikings (18-15, 6-6 NSIC) going 6-for-9 at the plate with a triple, two doubles and two RBI. O’Neill scored the game winning run in the first game, after leading off the eighth inning with a double.
O’Neill went 3-for-5 at the plate with a double to lead the Vikings in game one. Jake Petersen was 2-for-5 while matching his season-high with three RBI. Tony Viger and Alex Fink each added two hits in the game for the Vikings.
Augustana and Northern State accounted for 27 hits in the contest. Robbie Rocamora, Trevor Sporrer and Buddy Traxler each had two hits for the Wolves while Robert Fahlin was 3-for-3 while scoring two runs.
Augustana grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Jack Goihl cracked an RBI single up the middle to score Petersen who led off the inning with a single. The Vikings picked up three hits in its first chance at the plate but left two runners on base.
Northern State got a two-RBI triple by Derek Tymesen in the bottom of the third to put the Wolves on the board with the lead at 2-1. NSU extended its lead to 4-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning, plating two runs on three hits.
The Vikings charged right back with two runs in the top of the fifth to make it a 4-3 game. After Brian Duxbury walked and Zach Dibble was hit by a pitch to start the inning, Petersen delivered a two-RBI single up the middle to bring the Vikings within one.
Augustana allowed Northern State to go back up by three, at 6-3, as the Wolves scored two runs on two hits and two Viking errors in the fifth. Petersen drove in his third run of the game in the top of the sixth inning as he reached on a fielder’s choice to bring the Vikings within two at 6-4.
In relief of Augustana starter Kye Winter, Sam Gotham set the Wolves down in order in the bottom of the sixth inning to keep the Vikings within two. Augustana then scored three runs on three hits in the seventh to take a 7-6 lead.
Rocamora picked up his second hit of the game and big RBI with the game tying RBI single, knotting the game at 7.
O’Neill then led off the top of the eighth with a double to center field and came around to score what would end up being the game winning run.
Derek Quame relieved Gotham in the seventh and after giving up a leadoff triple in the bottom of the eighth inning, got three ground ball outs to keep the Wolves off the board and earn his first win of the season.
Grant Larson evened his record to 4-4 on the season tossing 5.0 innings while striking out seven batters and giving up just two hits. Augustana finished the game with nine hits while holding Northern State to just three. Alex Fink was the only other Viking with more than one hit in the game going 2-for-4.
Northern State grabbed a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on an RBI single by Rocamora.
After a scoreless second, Augustana tied the game at 1 when Jake Petersen lifted a sacrifice fly to right field to score Zach Dibble who singled and stole a base with one out. The Vikings took a 2-1 lead in the fifth inning on an RBI single by O’Neill, scoring Nate Hewes who led off the inning with a single.
The Vikings added some insurance in the top of the sixth inning when Winter lifted a sacrifice fly to right field to score Alex Fink, making it a 3-1 game. In the top of the seventh, Augustana scored two more runs on two hits to go in front 5-1. Petersen hit a one out double to right field and scored on O’Neill’s second triple of the season. Goihl then made it 5-1 with a sacrifice fly to center field to score O’Neill.
Augustana and Northern State will complete the four game series with a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m. Sunday at Westside High School in Omaha, Neb.
