A crash on Highway 42 about 20 miles outside Sioux Falls Friday killed the teenaged passenger and put the driver in the hospital.

17-year old Shadd Tullis was driving and attempting to pass two vehicles shortly after 6pm when he encountered another vehicle coming his way. Tullis attempted to get back in his own lane, lost control of the vehicle, tipped into the ditch and struck a utility pole.

His passenger, 16 year old Tonya Anderson of Parker, was pronounced dead at the scene. Tullis was airlifted to a hospital with serious, but non-life threatening injuries.

Neither were wearing their seat belts.
