Nvidia Unveils Android Handheld

Nvidia Project Shield

Shocking just about everyone with an announcement out of nowhere, Nvidia has revealed Project Shield at this year’s CES, a new Android handheld.

Debuting at CES 2013, Project Shield is a rather unique device which is basically a dual-analog controller with a built-in 5-inch flip display. The screen will include multi-touch support, and boasts 1280 x 720 HD resolution The big kicker though is the Tegra 4 processor running the whole device. Nvidia claimed it is the fastest mobile processor, capable of outputting performance six times greater than the Tegra 3, which can be found in devices like the Nexus 7.

Project Shield will also include a microSD slot, a micro USB port, and an HDMI port, which will allow players to stream games to a television should they be so inclined. The controller itself will also feature integrated bass-reflex speakers, an 802.11n WiFi antenna, and is capable of 5-10 hours of gameplay. With Android Jelly Bean, Project Shield can also play movies, music, and other media often attributed with similar mobile devices. Oh, and let’s not forget that Nvidia’s new device will be able to stream PC titles, meaning you could ostensibly play anything available on Steam right on this little controller.

Nvidia expects Project Shield to ship during the second quarter of 2013, though a price has yet to be disclosed. With the wealth of Android gaming devices arriving in 2013, it seems there’s a whole new console war brewing that doesn’t involve Microsoft, Sony, or Nintendo. Enjoy the brief demo video below.
