NFL Recap: Texans, Redskins, Patriots Win
A disputed call and two huge quarters helped decide the three NFL games held on Thanksgiving Day. Here’s a recap of the day’s action:
Houston 34 — Detroit 31 (OT)
Shayne Graham kicked a 32-yard field goal with 2:21 remaining in overtime, and the Houston Texans beat the Detroit Lions, 34-31, in Detroit on Thanksgiving Day. Lions’ kicker Jason Hanson missed a 47-yard field goal attempt earlier in overtime that would have won the game for Detroit (4-7).
Trailing 24-14 in the third quarter, Houston (10-1) tied the game thanks to Justin Forsett’s 81-yard touchdown run and a Graham field goal. Replays showed Forsett’s knee and forearm were down before he broke loose on the long run, but officials didn’t overturn the call because Lions’ coach Jim Schwartz threw a challenge flag, which negated the automatic review process and resulted in a penalty.
Arian Foster ran for 102 yards and two touchdowns for the Texans, including a 1-yard run with 1:55 left that tied the game at 31. Houston quarterback Matt Schaub threw for 315 yards and one score. Andre Johnson had nine catches for 188 yards for the Texans.
Lions’ quarterback Matthew Stafford passed for 441 yards and two touchdowns. Detroit receiver Calvin Johnson had eight receptions for 140 yards, including a touchdown, while
teammate Ryan Broyles had six receptions for 126 yards
Washington 38 — Dallas 31
Robert Griffin III passed for 311 yards and four touchdowns, and the Washington Redskins beat the Dallas Cowboys, 38-31, in Arlington, Tex. on Thanksgiving. Washington (5-6) scored 28 points in the second quarter and then held off a second-half rally by Dallas (5-6). Alfred Morris ran for 112 yards and a score for the Redskins. Tony Romo threw for 441 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions for the Cowboys. Dallas’ receiver Dez Bryant caught eight passes for 145 yards, including two scores.
New England 49 — N.Y. Jets 19
The Patriots scored 35 points in the second quarter, and New England routed the New York Jets, 49-19, in East Rutherford, N.J. on Thanksgiving night. Tom Brady passed for 323 yards and three touchdowns for New England (8-3), which scored four touchdowns in just over 6 minutes in its huge quarter.
Patriots’ receiver Julian Edelman scored on a 25-yard return of Joe McKnight’s fumbled kickoff and a 56-yard reception on a pass from Brady. Stevan Ridley ran for 97 yards and a score for New England. Quarterback Mark Sanchez threw for 301 yards, a touchdown and an interception for New York (4-7). The Jets committed five turnovers in the game.
