Newtown Tells Reporters to Stay Away

Residents of Newtown, Connecticut have asked news media not to come to their town to mark the one-year anniversary of the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

And speaking as a journalist but also a private citizen, I understand their feelings.

One year removed from a day of horror that was not only unspeakable but unthinkable, any observance of the event should be very private and should involve only those directly affected.

I’ve read some interesting observations in recent days about how any news outlet still planning to be there would need to limit their presence–you know, don’t roll in with the satellite trucks and such.

I have a feeling that reporters could really invite public wrath by showing up and calling attention to themselves. Or even by showing up at all.

Don’t get me wrong–I’m very much in favor of transparency in government and the public’s right to know.

This just doesn’t fit that situation, and we don’t need to see.
