New Sioux Falls Driver’s License Station Now Open

The South Dakota Driver Licensing Program has combined its Sioux Falls services into a larger, easily accessible location near the intersection of Russell Street and Kiwanis Avenue.

The new station is now in operation as of Monday, April 22nd. The station will be open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and most Saturdays from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Russell-Kiwanis location features more space, convenient parking and high visibility, along with convenient access on a major city street just off the interstate highway system.

Previously, Sioux Falls was served by two locations. There was a full service location on Westport Avenue near The Empire Mall. Plus a limited-service station had been in the Minnehaha County Administration building near downtown Sioux Falls. Due to spatial concerns in the County building, the licensing station was working on a temporary lease until a proper home was found. The Westport location was closed as of Saturday, April 20 and the downtown location closed on Friday April 19. Over the weekend, equipment was transferred to the new site to complete the goal of having licensing services available Monday morning at the new facility.

In addition to the traditional exam stations, the new site will have four self-service kiosks. The kiosks allow citizens to begin the application process themselves before they complete the process with a staff member. The kiosks should be in place by late spring.

South Dakota driver licenses are valid for five years. The 2013 Legislature authorized the Driver Licensing Program to create a system of online renewals. Once a South Dakotan has a federally compliant license, the renewal process will be able to be completed online, rather than in line, every other five-year cycle.
