There's a new commander of the South Dakota Highway Patrol's Sioux Falls District.

Captain Alan Welsh officially assumed command of the Patrol's Sioux Falls District on Thursday, January 9, one day after Captain Kevin Joffer  retired.

The 46-year-old Welsh had been assistant commander for the Patrol's 2nd District, headquartered in Sioux Falls, since 2006.

He's a 25-year veteran of the Patrol, and his official start date as captain came 25 years to the day after he joined the Highway Patrol on Jan. 9, 1989.

The Sioux Falls District includes 25 counties in the southeastern part of the state.
