NASCAR driver Tony Stewart was driving in a dirt race in upstate New York Saturday night when he accidentally hit and killed another driver who was walking on the track during the race.

Kevin Ward Jr. hit a wall on lap 14 of the 25 lap race. He got out of his car and was waving his finger at another driver as the cars had slowed due to the yellow caution flag. Stewart swerved to try to avoid Ward, but it appears his right rear tire hit Ward. Ward was taken to the hospital in an ambulance but had passed before arriving.

Stewart is cooperating with authorities. Stewart's team released the following statement:

"A tragic accident took place last night during a sprint car race in which Tony Stewart was participating. Tony was unhurt, but a fellow competitor lost his life. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends. We're still attempting to sort through all the details and we appreciate your understanding during this difficult time."

In the wake of the tragic accident, Stewart decided to not race at Watkins Glen Sunday.
