Neighborhood beautification plus a long-held goal by former Whittier Middle School students equals a sight to behold.  Meldrum Park in Sioux Falls is the home to a new art project thanks to Lela Himmerich an 8th grade social studies teacher and a few of her former students who are now juniors in high school.  The assignment was to enhance the community outside of the school and to keep it vital.

On Saturday over 90 adults & children took their turn on putting their colors on the mural with the help of artist Dave Lowenstein.  When putting the effort together, along the way a grant of $50,000 was secured from the National Endowment for the Arts.  Himmerich said a big part of obtaining the grant was due to the efforts of Nan Baker of the Sioux Falls Arts Council.

The mural is to depict what the Whittier neighborhood is about.  The mixing of cultures within that section of the city is displayed along with the aspect of play at Meldrum Park.  The park is located at 6th Street and Lewis Avenue which is almost midway between Whittier Middle School and Washington High School.
