After many record setting bitterly cold days in Minnesota, warmer temperatures are definitely welcomed!  But along with warmer temperatures comes melting snow and ice that can sometimes be just as dangerous as the colder temperatures themselves.

On Tuesday, March 3, 2015, a Twin Cities man avoided serious injury after a chunk of ice flew off a semi and crashed through the windshield of his vehicle while driving on busy road.

The driver, 45-year-old Jon McLaughlin of West St. Paul, was driving on the right side of the road about to use an exit ramp when a semi passed him on the left side of the road.  That's when a large sheet of ice flew off of the back of the semi and crashed through McLaughlin's windshield.

McLaughlin received only minor injuries that included cuts from the broken glass and ice.  He was able to make it to the side of the road to call for help.  The driver of the semi kept going.

The Minnesota State Patrol reminds drivers that it is illegal to drive any vehicle with material that could potentially break loose and create a hazard.

Even though  temperatures are warmer now, there still is a chance that Old Man Winter could show his ugly face for more snow and colder temperatures. Because of that, authorities want to remind travelers to stay farther back from larger vehicles, especially in the winter and spring when there is a mixture of freezing and melting temperatures.
