Minnehaha County Sheriff Mike Milstead says meth is one of the top drugs being abused in the area.

"I sound like a broken record for the past several years about meth in our community and its dangers. Much of our crime in Sioux Falls and Minnehaha County is driven by drugs like meth. We also have heroin and other drugs. This is a significant serious issue."

Milstead says meth arrests in Minnehaha County are increasing year after year.

"Our meth arrests are up 60 percent in the first four months of this year. We are being effective in locating and trying to identify these people. Once we get them arrested, there are opportunities for them to try to get off meth. In particular things like drug court and the success they have seen."

Milstead says the key to reducing drug abuse is accountability.

"If we can hold people accountable for possession or involvement in the meth culture we are going to reduce crime. Crime right now is on the increase in Minnehaha County."

Milstead says the recently announced texting program to report illegal drug use is a step in the right direction.
