A power outage affecting areas in south central Sioux Falls caused major headaches in Sioux Falls Friday.

Eric Pauli who is Community Relations Manager for Xcel Energy reported 8,493 customers without power during the middle portion of the day.  The outage lasted from 11:58 AM to 12:58 PM.  The area affected stretched from Kiwanis to Cliff west to east and north to south from 18th Street to I-229.

The cause of the outage as stated by Xcel Energy is a failed jumper within the substation.  A jumper is defined as a metal connector most times encased in non-conductive material that is used generally as an on/off switch.

Sioux Falls Police also issued a statement during the outage reminding motorists who encounter a non-working traffic signal to treat it as a 4-way stop.
