Mettler Earns Summit League Athlete of the Year Honors
ELMHURST, IL — South Dakota junior distance runner Jeff Mettler was named the Summit League’s Men’s Indoor Track Athlete of the Year in a league release sent out on Friday.
Mettler earned the award after leading South Dakota to its first Summit League Indoor Championship by winning titles in the mile and 3,000-meters, and placing third in the 5,000. His time of 8:18.69 in the 3,000 was a new league championship and DakotaDome record. Those performances earned him men’s Track Championship MVP honors.
During the season, Mettler had league-best times in the 3,000 (8:09.82) and the 5,000 (14:08.74), and had the third-best time in the mile (4:08.02). He was also named the Summit League’s Men’s Track Athlete of the Week three times, which was a league high.
