For one who has commanded the use of language to broaden so many horizons, it’s hard to find one superlative to describe her impact on society. Dr. Maya Angelou, renowned poet and writer, is slated to speak at Augustana College at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 23 at the Elmen Center.

This will be the second time Angelou has spoken at the Elmen Center. The first was back in 2007.

The event is sponsored and organized by the Union Board of Governors (UBG) Culture and Fine Arts Committee, a student-run campus programming organization.

Angelou’s works include "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings," "The Heart of a Woman," and "A Song Flung Up to Heaven." She most recently published "Mom & Me & Mom," written about her mother and released earlier in 2013.

Dr. Angelou has served on two presidential committees, was awarded the Presidential Medal of Arts in 2000, the Lincoln Medal in 2008, and has received three Grammy Awards. President Clinton requested that she compose a poem to read at his inauguration in 1993. Dr. Angelou's reading of her poem "On the Pulse of the Morning" was broadcast live around the world.

Tickets are $20 for bleacher seats and $40 for floor seats. Tickets are free for Augustana students with a valid ID; $10 for Augustana faculty/staff. Tickets are available at www.augietickets.com.
