The federal government shutdown has closed access to some popular Black Hills area tourist spots, but regional promoters are reminding tourists that they can still see some of the main attractions from the road.

And the South Dakota Department of Tourism wants you to know about all the other attractions that are unaffected.

True, the shutdown does affect such federal installations as Badlands National Park, Mount Rushmore, Wind Cave, Jewel Cave and the Minuteman Missile Site.

But the Tourism Department can quote you a long list of attractions throughout the state, starting with Custer State Park and the scenic highways in the Black Hills, including Needles Highway; fall foliage throughout the state including Newton Hills State Park and Sica Hollow; art galleries and museums along Interstate 29; wineries, glacial lakes and the shopping, arts and culture in Sioux Falls.
