A man on the run has caused a major disruption in Aberdeen. The man locked himself in a hotel room just as the Class B basketball tournament is set to begin.

According to Aberdeen Police Chief Dave McNeil, the man is wanted in connection with local crimes and was reported to have a handgun. Crisis negotiators and numerous law enforcement agencies converged on the Ramkota to try to diffuse the situation.

The convention center and the restaurant remained open through much of the afternoon. By evening the restaurant was forced to close down early.

Guests were able to check in but were not able to access their rooms immediately. The standoff started early Wednesday afternoon and continued well into the evening.

Scott Waltman of the Aberdeen American News reported that all eight boys basketball teams had reservations at the Ramkota. However, other accommodations to house the teams and support staff had been arranged.
