Since 2010, September 30 has been recognized as 'Support Purple for Platelets Day,' a day to increase the public's understanding of ITP and other platelet disorders.

According to the Platelet Disorder Support Association (PDSA), the most common platelet disorder is when a person's blood is unable to clot, meaning they could literally bleed to death.

So, as a way of showing support to those who suffer from a platelet disorder, everyone is encouraged to wear the color purple today.

'Support Purple for Platelets Day' is a time to let patients and their families know that there are resources and support available to help them, and that they're not alone.

PDSA offers a wide array of education and support services to patients and their families, as well as health care providers.

The group also provides free educational materials and information about treatments, diet, and support.
